Our Aim

At New Horizons Preschool, our aim is to prepare children not just for school, but for a lifetime of curiosity, collaboration and learning.

We believe every child is capable, competent and full of potential. Our role is to nurture that potential by creating an environment where children feel safe to ask questions, explore ideas, build relationships and develop a genuine love of learning.

Through meaningful play, sustained inquiry and intentional teaching, we support children to develop strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, communication and critical thinking. We believe these foundations are built most effectively when learning is engaging, purposeful and connected to children’s interests and experiences.

Above all, we hope every child leaves New Horizons with a strong sense of belonging, confidence in themselves and respect for others. We want children to know that their ideas matter, that they can contribute meaningfully to their community and that learning is a journey they can continue to enjoy throughout their lives.

An important aim … is to help students ‘learn how to learn’… the construction of knowledge is a subjective process that proceeds in a spiraling rather than linear or stagelike way.

Children sometimes work with teachers, and sometimes without them, projects are sometimes short, and sometimes long. The curriculum is … based on more flexible strategies than rigid plans.

I like to use the metaphor of taking a journey, where one finds the way using a compass rather than taking a train with it’s fixed routes and schedules.
